Video #3 of my Career Confusion to Clarity 5-Part Series is here.
I gotta tell you about a consult I had a few weeks back.
A soon-to-be college grad got on the phone with me.
Graduating in May. Confused about her next move. Dad on her case about “figuring it out” and getting a job. Impatient for answers.
(nothing I haven’t heard before)
Well as I’m gathering more information…
She stops me (mid-sentence) and says: Can I ask you a question?
I said: Sure!
She said: Do you really believe that you can make money from a passion? Because my dad doesn’t believe that. And he believes that passions should remain hobbies. And that I should get a real job that pays the bills.
My underlining was intentional right there 👆🏼
This is a classic case of “rule-following” or at least somebody– if not careful– is about to make some big life decisions based on what her dad believes to be true.
She is on the brink of joining the Quarter-Life Crisis Club.
(p.s. I used to be the Queen Bee of the “rule-following” hive and President of the “quarter-life” crisis club)
Here’s the thing…
When we’re children, we adopt these (limiting) beliefs from our parents, without ever questioning them.
And then we grow up to be adults and continue following their rules!
And because we were never taught how to think for ourselves, we never stop long enough to even think…
HMMM, what if they don’t know which path I should choose in life or what decisions to make?
What if I’m in charge here?
What if I actually know what’s best for me and MY LIFE?
Crazy concept, I know! —–> she says sarcastically.
Anyway, I HAD to share this example with you because it’s a beautiful illustration of TRAP #3 that I cover in today’s video.
