How to Overcome Creative Blocks (ONE Simple Tip!

June 8, 2016 | Written with Love By: Shaina Leis

I love being a right brain, creative thinker. There’s nothing more rewarding to me than bringing my ideas to life.

However, there are times where I experience creative blocks that make me wish I could use a spreadsheet or crunch some numbers to calculate the “answer.”

I am a doer. I take pleasure in checking things off my to-do list. So you can only imagine my frustration when I sit down to CREATE, but I come up completely BLANK. The struggle is real!

But I think I’ve finally nailed the solution to creative blocks.

As much as I thought staring at my computer for hours would spark some inspiration, it just doesn’t work that way.

There really is only ONE simple solution and today, I’m going to share it with you.

Today I’m talking about how to handle a creative block. I used to associate blocks specifically with writers- writer’s block…but no, it’s something that every creative soul- whether you’re a painter, animator, coach on Youtube, any profession or hobby that self-expression is present, you will experience this occasionally. It can be really frustrating in my opinion, so I’m going to share with you how I’ve learned to overcome my creative blocks to help you overcome yours too.

OPENING

One of my biggest traits is that I’m a forward thinker. So recently, I thought, “OK, my summer vacation is X amount of weeks away, which means from now until then, I have to pre-film 9 videos so that I don’t have to film or edit while I’m away. Which according to my calculations, that means filming two videos a week until I leave. Great, fantastic, no problem.

So then I decided OK this weekend, I’m not going to make plans and I’m going to come up with my 9 topics and I’ll start writing some material. Again, awesome Shaina. It’s in the bag. Way to stay on schedule.

Well the weekend rolls around. I wake up, I sit at my desk to work and nothing is coming to me. I pack my stuff up, walk down to a coffee shop, sit outside, set up my workspace and still nothing. 1pm, 2pm, 3pm…at this point I’m pissed.

I am a doer. If you say to me, “hey Shaina, I have this assignment for you, but it’s not important, you can totally do it anytime over the next month. You bet your ass that I’m getting it done the next day. That is just how I roll.

So you can imagine my frustration when I have my to-do list, and every intention in completing it and yet, I haven’t done anything.

This is when you realize that creativity is something that naturally moves through you, and it’s not something that can be forced.

If you google, how to overcome creative blocks, people will say redefine the problem, draw freely for a couple of minutes…and I get it. I think there are ways to get the juices flowing faster, and different things will work for different people, but in my experience I just want to give you one tip and that is…

Do NOT force it!

When inspiration isn’t striking, the more I resist that, and I’m like NO, I gotta stick to my schedule, the more frustrated I become and the bigger the block becomes. It’s a terrible cycle.

Instead, as hard as it is, just take a step back and do something else. When I was at that coffee shop, I thought, “me sitting here, trying to force ideas out of me is completely useless,” so I packed up my stuff and laid in my bed for an hour because I was so exhausted exerting my energy into resisting my block. Then, I asked myself what do I feel like doing now? I walked down the street and did some grocery shopping and low and behold, on my walk back, I came up with 2 video ideas. When I returned to my desk, I was IN THE FLOW and could onot type fast enough.

So if you’re experiencing a creative block and that’s why you’re watching this or if you find yourself in the future, just walk away. Don’t be mad about it. Just know and trust that you’ll find your inspiration by doing something else instead. Just do what feels good in that moment.

That’s it for today guys. If you liked this video, give it a thumbs up. Remember to subscribe to my channel if you haven’t done so already and I’ll see you back here next week.
