In the field of coaching, there are a ton of topics to cover and “how to” videos to make, but my specialty and “true love” are on passion.
In my opinion it’s the number one cause of concern and suffering among young people today- generation Y, the Millennials, recent grads, 20somethings…whichever category you want to place them in.
Thoughts like, “I don’t know what to do with my life,” and “I don’t know what I’m passionate about,” are extremely common. And of course, you don’t need to be in your 20’s to be having thoughts like these. There are plenty of people of all ages that are clueless when it comes to their passion.
But, here’s the thing. I have talked to A LOT of people who want to know the answer…
(I mean of course they do! Who wouldn’t want to be doing something they love AND getting paid to do it?)
But as soon as people realize it’s going to take some time and effort to discover what that passion is, it stops them in their tracks.
So if I can inspire somebody to take the journey of self-discovery or better yet, show them HOW, then I’ve done what I’ve set out to do.
This week, I challenged myself to take a BIG topic and create a short video to provide real, helpful information to others.
If you know someone who’s unsure about what their calling is in life, please SHARE this video with him or her. I was once in those shoes and would have greatly appreciated any guidance.
Welcome back guys. If this is your first time here, I’m Shaina and today, I’m talking about How to Find Your Passion.
Big topic. I’m excited to talk about it because I know, firsthand, the quality of life you live when you aren’t living your passion and the quality of life you live when you are. The difference is incredible.
So let’s get right into it.
The idea of doing something you love everyday- especially getting paid to do what you love- is appealing to people. It’s exciting. But once people realize that it takes time and effort to discover what that passion is, most of us go into default mode and continue doing whatever it is that we’re doing because it’s “easier”.
It’s not effortless guys so you must have a strong enough desire to be willing to put in the work.
If you’re on the fence of whether or not you want to do some self-discovery, let me tell you, I don’t care if it takes you months or years, it’s worth it. In fact if I had one piece of advice it would be “go discover your passion and live it.” Because it’s the most rewarding and fulfilling experience to step into who you really are. Which bring me to my next point:
Passion and Authenticity go hand in hand. If you’re watching this then I think it’s safe to say that you don’t know what your passion is. What that means is that you’re not living a fully authentic life. The true essence of who you are is still buried inside of you.
So how does that happen?
We are conditioned as young kids to act a certain way, how to think and which rules to follow. Social norms. Things like you should do this, you shouldn’t go for that, if you want to be successful you must go down this path, and so forth. When we follow these rules, we create a life that isn’t in alignment with our unique desires and personalities. It’s in alignment with somebody else’s.
Limiting beliefs is another part of it. We adopt a lot of our thinking from our parents and other authority figures, “work is supposed to be hard.” You’re not supposed to like your job.” “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” “You can’t make money doing that…” It’s the beliefs that steer the course of our lives and unfortunately not always in the right direction.
To find your passion, you must break these beliefs down one by one and disbelief them.
If I was taught that the only way to success was to climb the corporate ladder, I’ll be working in corporate for as long as I believe that. If I want to change my external reality, I must first change my belief system.
For example, if I change my belief to, “the way to real success is by finding my passion and doing something that I love” this is going to change my trajectory and what my life looks like.
In a nutshell, once you break down all the beliefs that aren’t leading you in the direction you want to go, you then start to think and believe whatever you want for yourself. And that’s when the magic starts to happen!
To find your passion, you must go on a self-discovery quest so to speak. It’s when you develop a stronger sense of self and start living from that place that your passion is uncovered.
The first thing I did was look at my past and pinpoint all the things I didn’t want and how I got there. Look at your life up until this point and find the clues. Because those clues are extremely valuable.
For me some of the realizations or clues that I came up with were: I definitely do not want to work under somebody else. I didn’t ever want to work in corporate. I hate sales. I wanted to do something creative. I wanted to help people in some way. I wanted to get in front of a lot of people. And so fourth.
Once your FREE from all the rules and limiting beliefs that have held you back for so long, and your like a free bird in the free world, you can start to FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITIES! Because now, you’re at a place where there are no limits!!
And if anyone has a problem with that…
STOP, DON’T TALK TO ME. LOSER. LAMO…
This is the phase when you try out a lot of different things without committing to anything. I talk about this more in my video “How to Manage Your Multi-Passionate Self.” If you haven’t seen it, I’ll link it down below. It’s a really great add-on to this video. So be sure to check it out.
During this phase, I signed up for class! I played around and taught myself how to build website because that was interesting to me. I read books that intrigued me. I started listening to different music.
Once I broke down the wall of this is what you’re supposed to be doing, these are the jobs you should be applying to…once I dismantled that, I was FREE to just do what felt RIGHT for me in the moment. And that’s the place you’ll get too.
And then one day, once you’ve allowed all these interests and talents and new passions marinate, you’ll confidently say, “I was always meant to be __________________.” And you will never forget that moment!!
(Last point) Your passion or your calling in life is not just one thing. It’s made up of ALL the facets of you. So I wouldn’t say my passion is just coaching or my passion is just making videos. It’s also talking about self-help, finding new ways to express my thoughts and ideas creatively. It’s being 100% myself in the process. My passion is speaking and writing and editing. It’s all of those things wrapped in one package.
And when you’ve found a way (and you will) to combine all the facets of what makes you you, you will officially be living your passion!
